Court: Baba Ijesha’s trial has been adjourned til September 27
Recall that Baba Ijesha was arrested on April 22, by Lagos State Police Command for allegedly sexually assaulting a 14-year-old minor who is a foster daughter of a popular comedian, Princess.
The actor is facing a six-count charge of sexual assault by penetration, indecent treatment of a child, and sexual assault.
The trial of popular Nollywood comic actor, Olanrewaju James, better known as Baba Ijesha, has been again adjourned till September 27, 2021.
Baba Ijesha’s trial was scheduled to hold today at the Ikeja Special Offences Court. However, the court could not proceed due to the absence of the presiding judge, Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo, who currently is attending a Judges’ Retreat alongside other members of the Lagos State Judiciary.
“He also attempted to have sexual intercourse with the complainant by unbuckling his belt and unzipping his trousers after sexually assaulting her,” the DPP told the court.
Baba Ijesha had, however, employed the services of two senior advocates of Nigeria – Dada Awosika and Babatunde Ogala, and other lawyers to defend him.
At the last court sitting, during cross-examination on the mother of the minor, comedienne cum actress, Damilola Adekoya aka Princess who appeared as a witness, said that she did not set up her foster daughter to be allegedly defiled by her colleague and erstwhile friend, Baba Ijesha.
The prosecution led by Mrs Olayinka Adeyemi, the Lagos State Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) has so far presented two witnesses for the prosecution.
The registrars at her court however disclosed that the new trial date has been communicated to all the parties to the suit.
One of Baba Ijesha’s lawyer, Kayode Olaniran, also told this reporter that “All Lagos judges have gone on retreat. They will also go on a vacation and we will see in September.”
