Anambra State declares Tuesday public holiday to honor Nnamdi Azikiwe

Anambra State government has declared Tuesday, November 16, 2021, as a public holiday in honour of Nigeria’s first president, Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe, who was born on November 16, 1904.
This was disclosed in a statement by the state commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Mr C. Don Adinuba.

Anambra State Governor, Chief Willie Obiano has previously called on the federal government to recognize the date as a nation-wide public holiday, in honour of Azikiwe’s contribution to Nigeria. This year makes it the third year the Anambra State government would be observing the birthday anniversary.

Police Reacts After Hoodlums Assassinates INEC Chairman In Anambra

There are claims that Yakubu was assassinated today by unknown gunmen, a deadly gang that has been terrorizing the South-East region. The officer said Yakubu held a stakeholders meeting in Awka today and stated the preparedness of the commission to hold peaceful election in the state. A statement Tuesday night by DSP Nkeiruka Nwode, debunked the circulating information.

Group Allege Plot By Officials Of Electoral Body, INEC To Rig Anambra Election. A civil society group, Save Nigeria Movement, has raised the alarm over an alleged plot by some officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to rig Saturday’s Anambra State governorship poll.

In a release in Abuja, the SNM convener, Solomon Semaka, alleged that the INEC National Commissioner in charge of logistics, Okey Ibeanu, and the INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Nwachukwu Orji, were part of the plot.

The group expressed concerns that the duo had not been questioned yet over an alleged involvement in a $4million bribery scandal as part of the attempt to compromise the Anambra election in favour of the ruling party, All Progressives Grand Alliance.

One military officer killed as troops neutralise IPOB/ESN gunmen in Anambra, recover AK47 rifles and ammunition. Troops of 82 Division Nigerian Army conducting Exercise GOLDEN DAWN have neutralized four gunmen of the proscribed Indigenous Peoples of Biafra/ Eastern Security Network (IPOB/ESN) in a fierce encounter at Nnobi Junction, Idemili South Local Government Area on Friday 29 October 2021.
In a statement released, Brigadier General Onyema Nwachukwu, said the suspected IPOB members had earlier on carried out an attack on personnel of security agencies deployed at Ekwulobia roundabout in Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State. He said after the attack, troops swiftly mobilized to the scene and subsequently embarked on the pursuit of the criminals along Nnewi-Nnobi road. He said the troops made contact with the fleeing gunmen and engaged them in a firefight, neutralizing four of the criminals.

Insecurity: Gunmen Abducts Man In Anambra

Gunmen on Thursday night attacked Ukwulu in dunukofia local government area of Anambra State and Kidnapped man to an unknown destination.

“Though the victim’s name was unidentified, It was gathered that he was abducted around Ukwulu axis, in dunukofia Local Government Area of the state on Thursday, October 28.

The victim was said to be returning from a trip when he was accosted by the kidnappers while driving. His car was abandoned by the roadside”, an eyewitness said.

Anambra Guber Election: Corps Members Vows To Withdraw From Poll Over IPOB Order

“I don’t want to die. My life is very important to my family. We have all witnessed the wrath of IPOB while they were trying to enforce the Monday sit-at-home. Many residents here have lost their lives because they violated the order.

National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, members in Anambra State have vowed to withdraw from the forthcoming governorship election over threats from the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB.
The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, often relies on corps members for the conduct of elections in all parts of the country. They are often used as Presiding Officers, PO and Assistant Presiding Officers, APO 1, 2 and 3 in most polling units during elections.

Due to the tension currently rocking Anambra State following moves by IPOB to halt the election, corps members serving in some local government areas of the state, told DAILY POST that they are not interested in taking part in the election currently being threatened. AMB recalls that IPOB had declared sit-at-home in order to halt the election, insisting that the Southeastern region does not need any election.

It stressed that the Federal Government must call for a referendum which would determine the corporate existence of the country.

NSA warns IPOB against plans to disrupt Anambra governorship election

President Muhammadu Buhari, has advised “those with the intention to disrupt Anambra governorship election” to have a rethink.

Mr Monguno, a retired major-general, gave the advice at the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES) meeting organised by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Monday in Abuja.

There is a general apprehension that the November 6 election may be affected by the sit-at-home order issued by (IPOB)

It will be recalled that the Indigenous People of Biafra has threatened to shut down the whole of southeast region for one week if its leader, Nnamdi Kanu is not released on or before November 4, 2021.

Nothing must stop Anambra governorship election - Buhari tells service chiefs

President Muhammadu Buhari has reportedly directed service chiefs to ensure that nothing stops the Anambra government election scheduled to hold on November 6. 

National Security Adviser (NSA), Major General Babagana Monguno (rtd) disclosed this while addressing State House correspondents at the end of Thursday’s security meeting chaired by the president.



Monguno said the directive was given following an increased attack allegedly carried out by proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

The deputy governor of Anambra State, Dr Nkem Okeke was formally presented to President Muhammadu Buhari by Gov. Hope Uzodimma of Imo and Governor Mai Mala Buni at the State House, Abuja on Wednesday.
