“The worst thing is that their death insurances have not been paid. And we think that they should be paid.
Nigerian Medical Association, NMA, has disclosed that the medical sector lost up to 30 doctors to the deadly Covid-19 pandemic.
Prof. Innocent Ujah also lamented the non-payment of their death benefits and insurance up till now by the government despite the fact they died in the line of duty. Besides, Professor Ujah lamented that doctors, especially in the South East were owed up to two years salaries a development he said had already affected their moral and called on the affected states to defray the backlog.
He said: “NMA right from the beginning of the pandemic has been very proactive, through advocacy and constructive engagements, dialogue and conversations.
Mr Buhari’s spokesperson, Garba Shehu, said this in response to the UK based news magazine, The Economist, which reported that the security situation in Nigeria was getting worse under Mr Buhari. “But this too the Economist inaccurately described: “bandits” who have the resources and technology to shoot down a military fighter jet are not bandits at all – but rather highly organised crime syndicates with huge resources and weaponry.
Yet they are essentially no different to Boko Haram in this regard who are now cornered,” Mr Shehu wrote in his response that he sent to NAN.
Many Nigerians including the Nigerian Senate and Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai have asked the president to declare the bandits as terrorists. The bandits, several armed groups operating mainly in North-west and North-central Nigeria, have killed or kidnapped thousands of people since Mr Buhari assumed office. In his response, Mr Shehu acknowledged the various security challenges facing the country but said President Buhari was addressing them.
